The Village of Spencerville
Home of the Historic Spencerville Covered Bridge
Welcome to our site! This site will be dedicated to giving you information on everything you will want to know about our little community. You will gain access to business information as well as all community events.
We have had such a great time these last few years at our festival. Unfortunately, due to our ecomomy, we have decided that we must cancel the festival, and replace it with several community events through out the year.
We appreciate the support that everyone has given us over the past several years for the festival and we hope to have your continued support for the changes we are about to make. We will continue to have our most awesome event, the Supper on the Bridge! The Supper on the Bridge is one of the most unique events in the area...you won't want to miss it!
We are always looking for, and in need of volunteers to help with our events. If you would be interested in helping in any area, please be sure to send us an e-mailor call 260-238-4532. Thanks for your Support!

The History of Spencerville and the Bridge
The Spencerville Covered Bridge has a rich heritige.
At one time, DeKalb County was home to five covered bridges: Newville, Dills, Spencerville, Houlton and Cedar Chapel. The Cedar Chapel Bridge has been restored at Conner Prarie in Hamilton County. The Spencerville Bridge is the only one remaining. The year of it's completion was 1873. A contract was awarded to John A. McKay for the construction of the bridge. He was to be paid $23 per lineal foot for 146 feet of the bridge. This amount was to be paid as fast as the material was furnished and the work progressed. He was also paid $12 for his drawings and specifications of the bridge. The bridge was to be finished by November 1, 1873 according to the contract.
Spencerville was first known as a river settlement on the big bend of the St. Joe River. It has been identified as the first settlement in DeKalb County which began in 1828. The first store was established in 1838. By 1840, a dam was constructed and a saw mill was operating. By 1843, the town had it's first doctor and the grist mill was operating by 1845. In 1853, the first "free" school was operating and in 1898, the first high school was built
There were reports that Spencerville was founded by John Spencer and named after him, but those reports were proven to be false. The truth is that the land was planned or laid out on the Dawson Farm and called Spencerville by Ruben J. Dawson in honor of his brother-in-law, Col. John Spencer (at this time Collector of Monies for the U.S. land office in Ft. Wayne).
This is a very brief synopsis of the history of this area. For more info on this subject, please check your local library.

Past Festivals
We have had such an awesome time putting on our festivals of the past and have hated to see them end.
With that said, we would still like to see some of the entertainment from these past festivals be incorporated into our lineup of events.
With the economy being like it is, we are hopeful that our transition will be benificial to not only the village of Spencerville, but to you as well.
Your imput would be greatly appreciated! Just go our Comments page and submit your ideas.
Enjoy the video and reminice along with us as you view the piotures of the last few festivals. All the songs on the video were sung by The Fords who have performed at several of our festivals.
